Earthen Masonry Council of India

Reviving India’s Earthen Heritage. Building a Sustainable Future.

Tourist Place

Vision

To revive, promote, and standardize earthen construction practices across India, honouring centuries-old wisdom while integrating modern sustainability, safety, and performance standards.

Mission

To establish a unified national platform that strengthens and formalizes India’s rich legacy of earthen construction.

This includes developing world-class research programs, creating structured training systems for artisans and professionals, and building standardized certification pathways.
Through this, EMCI aims to empower communities, upgrade skills, and reintroduce earthen architecture as a respected, modern, and technically robust discipline.

1.

To document, preserve, and map the diverse earthen traditions of India—from cob houses in the North-East, to adobe clusters in Rajasthan, to rammed earth architecture in the Deccan.

This registry will record traditional methods, exemplary structures, master masons, heritage clusters, soil behaviours, innovations, and contemporary use-cases.

The goal is to build an authoritative national database that guides research, safeguards Indigenous knowledge, and becomes a cornerstone for future policy and academic work.

2.

To evolve India’s official codes and manuals for earthen construction.

This mission aims to transition earthen construction from an informal, undocumented practice into a recognized, codified, and engineer-approved building system.

By aligning with national sustainability agendas, disaster-resilience standards, and modern performance requirements.
